Zakat al-Fitr also known as Sadaqatul Fitr is a compulsory charity that every eligible Muslim must give before Eid salah. It serves two key purposes: purifying our fasts from shortcomings and ensuring the poor can celebrate Eid with dignity.
Who Must Pay Zakat al-Fitr?
Every Muslim (male or female) who possesses wealth beyond their basic needs that reaches the Nisab threshold (Hanafi school) or has enough food for one day and night of Eid (other schools).
The head of the household must also pay on behalf of their dependents, including children and those under their care.
When Should It Be Paid?
Best time: During Ramadan, preferably in the last few days, Before the Eid salah.
Makruh (disliked) time: After Eid salah.
Invalid time: Delaying it unnecessarily beyond Eid day.
What Is Given?
The amount is equivalent to one Sa’ (approx. 2.5-3 kg) of staple food like wheat, dates, barley, or rice, or its monetary value. The amount varies yearly based on market rates.

1. Ibn Umar (RA) reported:
"The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) made Zakat al-Fitr obligatory as a sa‘ of dates or a sa‘ of barley upon the slave and the free, the male and the female, the young and the old among the Muslims, and he commanded that it be given before the people go out for the (Eid) prayer."
(Bukhari 1503, Muslim 984)
2. Ibn Abbas (RA) reported:
"The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) made Zakat al-Fitr obligatory as a purification for the fasting person from idle talk and obscene speech, and as food for the poor. Whoever pays it before the Eid prayer, it is an accepted Zakat. Whoever pays it after the prayer, it is merely charity."
(Abu Dawood 1609, Ibn Majah 1827)
3. The Prophet (ﷺ) commanded that Zakat al-Fitr be given before the Eid prayer, ensuring that the poor receive it in time. (Bukhari 1503, Muslim 984)
4. The obligation is upon every Muslim, whether rich or poor, as long as they possess enough beyond their basic needs. Ibn Umar (RA) emphasized that the Prophet (ﷺ) made it compulsory for every Muslim, young or old. (Bukhari 1503)
