Sadaqah Jaariyyah: A Lasting Reward

Sadaqah Jaariyyah, or ongoing charity, is one of the most powerful forms of giving in Islam, providing continuous rewards even after a person has passed away. Unlike a one-time act of charity, it benefits people for years to come, ensuring that the giver continues to earn rewards from Allah.

The Prophet ﷺ said:

"When a person dies, all their deeds come to an end except three: ongoing charity, beneficial knowledge, or a righteous child who prays for them." (Muslim)

This means that even when we leave this world, the rewards of our charity can continue to benefit us in the hereafter.

Qur’anic Promise of Multiplication

Allah ﷻ emphasises the immense reward of charity in the Qur’an:

"The example of those who spend their wealth in the way of Allah is like a seed [of grain] that sprouts seven spikes; in each spike is a hundred grains. And Allah multiplies [His reward] for whom He wills. And Allah is All-Encompassing and Knowing." (Surah Al-Baqarah 2:261)

This verse highlights that even a small act of charity can be multiplied many times over by Allah’s mercy.

Examples from the Life of the Prophet ﷺ

The Seerah (life of the Prophet ﷺ) is filled with examples of Sadaqah Jaariyyah.

  • Wells of Madinah: When Uthman ibn Affan (RA) purchased the Well of Rumah to provide free water for the people, the Prophet ﷺ said: "Whoever buys the Well of Rumah will have Paradise." (Bukhari) That well continues to provide water to this day!
  • Masjid An-Nabawi: The Prophet ﷺ himself participated in building Masjid An-Nabawi, a place of worship that has continued for over 1,400 years. Every prayer, every Qur'an recitation, and every act of worship performed there adds to his rewards.
  • Teaching Knowledge: The Prophet ﷺ taught his companions, who then spread Islam across the world, showing that knowledge is a form of charity that never stops giving.

What Can Be Sadaqah Jaariyyah?

There are many ways to give ongoing charity:

Building a water well – Every drop of water benefits someone.

Supporting orphans & education – Knowledge lives on in students.

Building a masjid – Every prayer brings rewards.

Providing Qur’ans – Each recitation is a blessing.

Sponsoring medical aid – Healing people in need.

By giving Sadaqah Jaariyyah, you are investing in your Akhirah and leaving behind a legacy of goodness that continues even after you return to Allah.
